As hip-hop undergoes evolution, categorizing sub-genres by location or sound is gradually proving to be more difficult. However, as someone who is enthusiastic about music, it is important to know different sub-genres of hip-hop in order to appreciate the extent to which the genre is impacting people’s lives. It goes without saying that certain types of hip-hop are more appealing than others. The most popular hip-hop sub-genres include:
Trap
This is one of the most dominating types of hip-hop. It borrows a lot from the early 1990s hip-hop, and it is popular for its aggressive lyrics and 808-driven production.
Boom-bap
This sub-genres has its origin in New York, and it was very popular especially between early to mid 1990s. It is known for its hard-hitting beats and street-focused rhymes.
Alternative Rap
Also known as conscious rap (although conscious artists hate being referred to as conscious), Alternative rap, promotes themes around knowledge and awareness.
Gangsta Rap
It originated in California, and it was so popular in the 1990s. Because of its focus on gang lifestyle and violence, Gangsta rappers are not new to controversies. This could be the reason it is not as popular as it used to be.
